About the Artist & the Art

Artist Bio
Cassandra Karyshyn is an artist based in Maryland who specializes in sneaker art and custom painting. She is currently studying graphic design at Montgomery College and plans to transfer to Salisbury University next year. At age sixteen, she decided to turn her God-given talents into a custom art business known as Cassy Kustoms. Since then, Cassandra’s work has been featured on many well-known pages such as Sharpie, Angelus Direct, Liquid Kicks, CANVVS, and Highlighther. Her artwork has been sold to numerous personal collections in countries such as Belgium, Mexico, Australia, and the United Kingdom, as well as 26 states in the United States.
Artist Statement
No matter what my canvas is, my biggest motivation for creating is simply living in a world surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation. I fell in love with using footwear as my canvas so that people can wear my art wherever they walk, instead of walking by it on a wall. Sneaker art allows me to combine my passion of painting with other’s passion for shoes. To ensure that my paintings will last, I use thin coats of acrylic leather paint after thoroughly preparing the surface. I love incorporating the organic flows of flowers such as carnations, roses, and monstera leaves in my compositions. I also gravitate towards cool colors such as blue, sage, and seafoam in my work because of the peaceful feelings they provoke.
When creating, I usually envision what the final piece will look like first. I paint because I want those ideas in my head to become a physical reality that can also inspire other people. Sharing the behind-the-scenes process of my artwork online has also become a big part of my life and an art form of its own. My artwork is a result of a perfectionism mindset because I care about the work that my hands produce. My eye for detail allows me to slow down and pay attention to every spot that needs another stroke of my paintbrush. Together, all of these carefully handcrafted moments form the final product.
